Local Firm gets Army Contract

FREDERICK — A local firm has been awarded a $7.8 million contract to supply portable voice and data communications equipment to the U.S. Army.
Engineering Systems Solutions Inc. on Industry Lane received the contract for the systems to be used by soldiers in remote regions. The company is a subcontractor to the Technical and Management Services Group in Calverton.
In August, ESS held an open house to show the equipment, which ranged from a basic language translator service (BLTS) to a counterintelligence human intelligence automated tool set (CHATS) and a personnel management and tracking system (PERMATS).
The BLTS system allows a soldier who finds documents in Arabic in Iraq, for example, to use a small handheld device that scans the document and sends the image to a laptop computer, which can be in a Humvee or other location nearby. The information is then relayed to headquarters or another location and can be read in English.
The CHATS system fits into a relatively small case and includes an antenna for satellite communications and date can be entered and sent or retrieved quickly in the field.
The PERMATS system is designed to help soldiers and civilians collect and ascertain data on people from taking photos and making badges to validating information on prisoners or refugees.
The basic language translation system is already in use by U.S. Army Rangers in Iraq.
